Much of what our society considers common knowledge about sex offenders is currently under debate — from the efficacy of the registry, to housing restrictions, to what treatment, if any, works. One of the most controversial practices is “dead time” — where sex offenders stay in prison for years beyond their sentence, simply because there is no where else for them to go. VICE News’s Alice Hines reports on how our society’s efforts to protect the public from violence ended up backfiring.

Someone asked me once how I determined which topics to cover. I answered that I have all these topics in my mind but one at a time they move to my heart and I get really curious and passionate enough to research and teach — to sexplain. This is what happened with the registry. There wasn’t a personal experience or an audience question, it just shifted from my head to my heart and had to come out. At first I used the registry to understand it from a laypersons perspective. I was shocked that Bill Cosby was not on there so early I learned the list isn’t accurate. Then I spoke with a police detective, and two therapists who work with sex offenders. I used to work with sex offenders too but didn’t take that into account. What I gathered from these sources, and then all the studies I read online, is that sex offender registries, at least the public registries in the U.S. are not fair, don’t work right, and do incredible harm.

Watch a video conference for Michigan registrants, held Feb. 17 with ACLU Senior Attorney Miriam Aukerman, Oliver Law Group Attorney Alyson Oliver, and Paul Reingold to learn updates for registrants after the ruling Feb. 14.

On Feb. 14, U.S. District Judge Robert Cleland ruled to provide relief for registrants on the Michigan Sex Offender Registration Act. Judge Cleland ordered that if the legislature does not bring the law into compliance with constitutional requirements, the state will no longer be able to enforce the law against pre-2011 registrants.
